JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A feud within Nelson Mandela’s family over the burial site of three of his children is intensifying — with the filing of criminal charges against one of his grandsons.
The charges come as Mandela himself remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Sixteen relatives had taken grandson Mandla Mandela to court after he re-buried the remains of the three Mandela children in the town where Mandela was born (Mvezo). The relatives say he hadn’t sought permission to move the bodies, and hadn’t even told family members when he did so.
Nelson Mandela has long said that he wants to be buried in another town — Qunu — where the children had been buried in the family plot before the bodies were moved to the town where Mandla Mandela plans to open a hotel. Arguments were heard today over a court order calling for the bodies to be returned to Qunu.
Meanwhile, police said criminal charges of “tampering with a grave” were filed against Mandla Mandela over the moving of the three bodies.
