RL Lipton strike ends

Lipton strike ends
A week-long strike by workers at RL Lipton Distributing Co. has ended.

Drivers and warehouse workers for RL Lipton Distributing will be heading back to work on Monday.

The members of Teamsters Local 377 approved a new contract Wednesday afternoon that was reached Tuesday night with the help of a federal mediator. The deal gives the drivers more lucrative commissions, but does not guarantee there will be no changes made to the health care benefits.

The workers went on strike June 25, and began picketing outside the company’s warehouse on Victoria Road in Austintown. The union said its contract expired in May.

Wages and health care were the major stumbling blocks in negotiations, the union said. When the strike first began, a scuffle occurred between security workers and striking workers.

On Monday, Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Niles, sent a letter to the union president and the company owner, urging a quick resolution to the strike.

RL Lipton Distributing Co. is a wholesale beverage distributor. Common brands include Anheuser-Bush products, Hansen Monster energy drinks, Yuengling beer products and other custom beer and wine products.
