Work is underway to demolish the old Paramount Theater in Downtown Youngstown.

Hazel Street between Federal and Commerce is closed for the next 90 days. There are also lane restrictions on West Federal Street during the day while crews work to demolish the property.

A parking lot will replace the building.

Back in its heyday, 1,700 people would pack inside to watch vaudeville acts, silent movies and eventually major motion pictures.

Several attempts were made to revive the theater, but all failed after the building was found to be structurally unsound.
