The track and field team “Tri-County Team Elite” will represent the Youngstown area at the AAU Junior Olympics at Eastern Michigan University July 29 – August 3.
Fourteen kids, ranging from ages seven to 16, will compete in events such as the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 4 x 100 meter relay, shot put, discus, and long jump.
Team Elite is a group meant to not only help kids athletically, but give them a place to go to stay out of trouble.
“Our team has traveled all across Ohio,” said Tri-County Team Elite founder and president Derrick Stredrick. “We’ve traveled to PA, and now we’re on our way to Eastern Michigan. These are places kids can’t say they’ve been, seen or anything. I think it’s a good experience to not only to give them the experience, but to also give them a goal to work out. As we’re working out, give them a goal to keep in mind. This is what we’re trying to reach.”
While the kids certainly love competing, Stredrick believes his group is even more than a team.
“Tri-County Team Elite, we’re more of a family,” Stredrick said. “So, winning is second. Family is first. But, of course, we go to the track meets, expecting to win.”
The Tri-County Team Elite will hold a fish dinner fundraiser on Friday, July 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at 1231 E. High Avenue in Youngstown. Each fish dinner costs $8, with all proceeds helping to fund the travel expenses to the Junior Olympics. Donations and sponsorships are also accepted.
