New stores planned for plaza

It appears recent talk of adding a new grocery store to a Boardman shopping plaza may only be just the beginning of what could be a major facelift.

Construction crews already started removing some of the old façade from the now-closed Value City department store in the Tiffany Square plaza near U.S. Route 224 and Interstate 680. A Good Cents store, which is a subsidiary of Giant Eagle, plans to take over the space.

Developers said on Friday they plan to do more than just add a supermarket. They’ve submitted plans to make over the entire property.

“That plaza is a sea of pavement, old-fashioned exterior,” said Boardman Township Zoning Inspector Sarah Gartland. “They want to really make it a modern development, modern location for plaza tenants. And it will make a huge impact on that intersection.”

Gartland said the entire plaza will have new landscaping, including hundreds of new trees and shrubs. Three segments of the lot will be parceled out for individual businesses, like banks or restaurants.

Developers are expected to discuss their plans in more detail next week before the township’s Site Plan Committee.
