Ohio man finds 50 dynamite sticks under pool tank

LORAIN, Ohio (AP) — Police evacuated several blocks in a northeast Ohio neighborhood after a homeowner discovered about 50 sticks of dynamite underneath a pool filtration tank.

The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/14uP2Et ) the bags of dynamite may have dated back to the 1960s.

It wasn’t clear where it came from. Dynamite is illegal to have without a permit.

Lorain police Capt. Tom Mize tells the newspaper that police used diesel fuel to slowly burn the dynamite in the road on Wednesday. He said given the age of the dynamite, it could have been dangerous to move. A bomb robot prodded the dynamite to make sure it didn’t explode.

Area residents were prevented from entering their homes for several hours while the dynamite slowly burned. No injuries were reported.
