Some train wreck evacuees return home

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — More than 1,000 people who were forced from their homes by a fiery derailment of an oil train in Quebec are being allowed to return home. Officials say the fire is finally under control.

The search continues for the nearly 40 people still missing in the aftermath of Saturday’s wreck in a town near the border with Maine. At least 13 people are known to have died.

After days of delay, searchers are now examining the charred epicenter of the wreck, looking for what could be dozens of additional victims.

At least five of the train’s tankers exploded after coming loose early Saturday, speeding downhill nearly seven miles and derailing in the town of Lac-Megantic.

A waitress who was standing outside the Musi-Cafe downtown says she spotted the blazing train barreling toward her and ran when someone screamed, “The train is going to derail!”

Investigators looking into the fiery derailment are focusing on an earlier blaze on the same train and how a series of actions following it may have caused the locomotive’s brakes to fail several hours later.
