Flap leaves 11-seat Detroit board with 12 members

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit’s 11-seat school board currently has 12 members after an appointment to fill a vacant seat by the district’s state-appointed emergency manager was challenged.

The Detroit News reports (http://bit.ly/18RVCcy ) Roy Roberts appointed Jonathan Kinloch, president of the Detroit Library Commission, to fill the vacant seat. On Thursday, however, the school board voted to nominate Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, a former candidate for state representative, to fill the vacancy.

The flap is among the issues Wayne County Circuit Court judge could rule on during a court hearing scheduled for July 19.

Detroit Public Schools board President LaMar Lemmons says Roberts is overstepping his authority by appointing board members.

Roberts’ spokesman Steven Wasko says state law allows the appointment.
