Local hero wins place at MLB game

A resident of Shepherd of the Valley in Howland will represent the Cleveland Indians during the People Magazine Tribute to Heroes at the All Star Game in Chicago.

Ray Matwich, formerly of Leavitssburg, and two other local contestants were chosen from thousands of nominations from across the country. Matwich received the most votes and will represent the team at the game July 16.

According to the MLB People Tribute to Heroes website, Matwich was in charge of guarding the war room in which plans for Operation Dragoon, the invasion of South France, were being made. Matwich also received five battle stars.

After returning home the war, Matwich was active in the American Legion and coached baseball teams of all ages.
