Hundreds of red balloons flew through the air Sunday afternoon as part of an effort to help the homeless.

Olivia Helmick, 8, of New Middletown, launched 500 balloons from Welker Park, all of them filled with tickets for the upcoming Olivia’s Backyard Carnival.

Last year, Olivia had the carnival in her own backyard and raised more than $2,000 for the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

“I want them to have a better life so they can have more food, more toys and have more joy,” Olivia said.

Olivia’s BackYard Carnival is from noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at Welker Park.
