Body found in creek identified as Ohio missing boy

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio authorities have positively identified the body of a boy swept away in a rain-swollen creek Sunday.

The Summit County medical examiner’s office on Monday confirmed the body found in the creek Sunday was that is 12-year-old Nicholas Shaffer of Akron.

Nicholas went missing Thursday after falling or jumping off a retaining wall and into Mud Brook creek while sitting with his mother.

Three people who witnessed the incident jumped into the creek to try to rescue the boy, but they were unsuccessful.

The creek behind an apartment complex is normally a foot deep, but heavy rains had turned it into a rushing waterway.
