A Liberty man pleaded guilty Monday to shooting his brother’s pregnant girlfriend in the leg last year.
Taddarrell D. Mason, 20, of Townsend Avenue, pleaded guilty Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to attempted murder, felonious assault and assaulting a police officer.
Judge Peter Kontos immediately sentenced Mason to nine years in prison.
Mason shot Jaimeela L. Montgomery, then 21, of the same address at about 5:45 a.m. July 23, 2012.
She underwent successful surgery and her unborn baby was unharmed.
Reports said a neighbor called police about 5:45 a.m. because she saw the woman outside in the hallway bleeding.
Officers arrived and found Montgomery sitting at the top of the third floor stairs being held by her boyfriend.
Reports said Montgomery had gunshot wounds to her legs and had blood on her shirt and underwear. Officers tried to talk to Montgomery who kept saying she was having trouble breathing. She told officers that she was shot by her boyfriend’s brother.
Officers searched the apartment, where her boyfriend also lived, and found four shell casings from a .45 caliber bullet and one bullet inside the home.
Witnesses told police that Mason fired the gun and fled, reports said.
Shortly after, Mason went to the Liberty Administration Building, which also houses the police department, and pounded on the door.
He left and an off-duty Hubbard Township officer spotted Mason walking eastbound on Route 304. The officer asked him to stop, and Mason refused. Mason was eventually apprehended on Route 304 near the intersection of Logan Way.
