Ohio priest put on leave amid sex-abuse probe

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio priest has been put on administrative leave amid a child-sexual-abuse investigation.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/194ySGm ) reports the Rev. Ronald J. Atwood, the pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Columbus, will remain on leave while the city’s diocese looks into an allegation involving the sexual abuse of a child that allegedly took place during the late 1970s.

The diocese learned of the accusation Monday and Atwood was put on leave Wednesday.

He was a teacher at Bishop Ready High School and an associate pastor of two parishes in Franklin County during the time the alleged abuse occurred. He has been a priest in the Columbus diocese since 1969.

Atwood has not been charged with a crime. The diocese says it has notified the county’s children services agency.
