O’Neill earns 3rd Emmy nod

Youngstown native Ed O’Neill received his third consecutive Emmy nomination for his role on the hit television series “Modern Family.”

O’Neill, who plays Jay Pritchett on the series, lived and worked in Youngstown until he left for New York City.

O’Neill also earned two Golden Globe nominations in 1992 and 1993 for his role as Al Bundy on “Married…With Children.”

The 67-year-old actor was given an honorary doctoral degree earlier in the summer from Youngstown State University, where he also delivered a commencement speech.

He played football for Youngstown Ursuline High School, and later for YSU. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and was cut during training camp.

He also performed in the YSU theater department productions.

O’Neill worked various jobs in Youngstown, including a steel salesman. He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.
