13 more killed in Iraq today; 2 prisons attacked

BAGHDAD (AP) — Bombings and shootings in Iraq have killed 13 people today, a day after a wave of car bombings and other attacks left more than 70 dead.

The deadliest of today’s attacks came when gunmen fired on a checkpoint manned by Kurdish security forces near Kirkuk, killing five.

More than 450 people have been killed in Iraq so far this month, including at least 284 since Ramadan began on July 10, according to an Associated Press count.

In another sign of the deteriorating security situation, police say insurgents detonated two bombs outside a prison north of Baghdad today. Then they lobbed mortar shells at the compound before opening fire on prison guards as rioting inmates set fire to blankets and furniture. Prison guards were eventually able to restore order.

Gunmen also clashed with guards at a prison in Abu Ghraib in Baghdad’s western suburbs.

No casualties were reported in either of the evening prison attacks.
