Firefighters in Niles had to fight side-by-side house fires overnight and a third fire on the same block.

Both started shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of East Park Avenue.

One home burned to the ground and the other was heavily damaged. Firefighters protected the homes on either side.

Both houses were empty. The cause of the fires has not been determined.

A third building believed to have once been used as a church on the block caught fire later.
