Woman, 27, dies after hiking southern Utah’s Wave

KANAB, Utah (AP) — A 27-year-old Arizona woman who was hiking a popular southern Utah trail with her husband has died after getting lost in the desert heat.

Kane County Emergency Services officials say Elisabeth Ann Bervel, of Mesa, Ariz., died Monday after hiking The Wave.

Deputies say Bervel and her husband had won permits to hike the restricted area seven months ago and took the trek to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.

Officials say the couple lost the trail a few times on the way back, and Bervel became fatigued. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene about 2 p.m., but officials say Bervel was in cardiac arrest by the time rescuers arrived and died.

The cause is under investigation.

Deputies say the Bervels have two sons, ages 4 and 5.
