SASSY group tours Metroparks

A group of senior citizens were treated to a day at the Metroparks farms on Wednesday.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Salvation Army hosted the SASSY seniors (Salvation Army Senior Sensations) for a wagon ride through the farm and a tour of the barns and gardens.

The event co-chair Carol Bigelow said the outing is a way for the group to socialize and a chance to experience things they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to see. Bigelow said many of the members of SASSY are homebound and a trip to the farms is an important part of the programming that brings the group together to combat the isolations that some seniors might feel.

“Just for them to see a part of our community and get out and be with other people,” said Bigelow. “It is rewarding for us as volunteers and rewarding for them.”

The SASSY group was also treated to lunch at the farms and received a goody bag.

SASSY meets every Wednesday at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown.  For more information call 330-746-8403.
