Scrappers earn doubleheader sweep

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers earned a doubleheader sweep of State College Wednesday night at Eastwood Field. Mahoning Valley won game one, 2-1, while prevailing in game two 1-0. Both games required extra innings.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning of game one, Martin Cervenka drew Mahoning Valley to even with a solo homer to left. The game was tied 1-1 on his first long ball of the season.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when the Scrappers loaded the bases. Paul Hendrix drew a bases-loaded walk for the game-winning RBI to seal the victory.

In the nightcap, Juan Herrera drove in the game’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to secure a 1-0 Scrappers victory.

Mahoning Valley improves to 14-23 on the season, while State College drops to 18-18.

The series resumes Thursday night at Eastwood Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
