2 to court in woman’s death outside W. Pa. tavern

CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Two men have been ordered to stand trial on charges they beat, strangled and sexually assaulted a woman they met in a western Pennsylvania before pushing her nude body into a river.

Criminal homicide and other charges were held for court against Paul Bannasch, of Hopwood, and Craig Rugg, of Connellsville, after Rugg’s recorded statement to police was played at a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Rugg says the men, both 24, met 52-year-old Margaret “Peggy Sue” Kriek and went outside the Connellsville bar just after midnight June 22 to discuss sexual activity. Rugg says he became angry and punched Kriek when she was “no longer interested” in having sex, before they killed her and dumped her body.

Rugg says they had “no purpose” in killing Kriek, other than to hide the initial assault, because they were “scared.”
