Community members burned thousands of calories Saturday during an event at an Austintown gym to benefit area athletes.
The Body Shop Total Fitness held a Shred-a-thon fundraiser to raise money for the non-profit organization Youngstown Fit. The organization helps athletes who might need assistance with entry fees or traveling expenses for competitions.
Shred is an intense workout program that includes cardio and resistance training. The Shred-a-thon was scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each class lasted 60 minutes.
“We start off with a warm up period then we go right into cardio,” said personal trainer Phillip Albenze. “We go into resistance band, into abs and core and two rounds of stretching. The first wave goes in, the second wave come in. We just keep hitting it non-stop.”
The class instructor estimates participants burned about 6000 calories during the six hour period.
