The Boardman carport that collapsed on an Uzbekistan family two weeks ago did so because a 23-year-old girl driving the car accidentally drove in reverse, striking the back wall and a later a metal support column that caused the collapse, according to reports released this week.
Reports say the driver, Dilnoza F. Parpieva, 23, was ticketed for reckless operation off road. She is due in Mahoning County Boardman Area Court on Aug. 8.
Reports say the accident trapped three people— Parpieva’s huband, Yulduz, 52, and two children, Mukhammadaziz Mamurjonov, 2, and Muhammadbdbur Mamurjonov, 1— were injured when the carport roof collapsed.
Dilnoza Parpieva told police, through a family friend that was translating because she spoke no English, that she was backing up when the car “went out of control,” reports say. She told police she only remembers going through the carport once, seeing it collapse and running to get her husband.
Investigators reported they believe she drove backwards through the carport in a semi-circle, striking the back wall first then hitting the support pole near the exit.
