TC film fest takes ownership of State Theatre

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — The Traverse City Film Festival is taking over as sole owner of the historic State Theatre downtown.

Film festival founder Michael Moore is to celebrate the development at a ceremony Tuesday alongside representatives of Rotary Charities of Traverse City — the original holder of the theater’s mortgage.

Rotary Charities acquired the State Theatre in 2006. It later agreed to make a grant of the building to the film fest.

Under Moore’s direction, the State was renovated, reopened in 2007 and has remained open every day since.

The State met all of Rotary’s requirements for the years of the mortgage.

So, now, Rotary Charities is placing the building completely in the ownership of the Traverse City Film Festival.

Tuesday’s ceremony coincides with the opening day of this year’s film festival.
