Ohio’s corn crop is looking like it could be one of the best in years throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported 75 percent of Ohio’s corn is in good or excellent condition.

Agland Grain merchandiser Ralph Wince said the mild summer has created the perfect climate for the corn to grow.

“Instead of a hot, dry summer like we saw a year ago, we are seeing more of a cool, wet summer having nearly ideal conditions across the state of Ohio for the corn crop,” said Wince.

The majority of corn throughout the state of Ohio is field corn which will not be harvested until August, but the sweet corn crop is in full swing. Rick Molnar with Molnar Farms said because of the weather conditions, they haven’t had to water the crop once this summer.

“It saves us a lot of money and time, which is more convenient. We can focus on other things and don’t have to worry about getting up every morning and pulling out irrigation lines,” said Molnar.

With the booming crop comes a supply and demand issue that affects the price of corn. That’s good for the consumer, but poses a problem for farmers.

“A year ago we would have been talking about $7 corn at harvest, and this year we talking about $4 corn at harvest,” said Wince. “Yields are better, but prices are going to be a little bit cheaper across the country.”

Molnar said even though it has been a great start for the corn crops, the weather could change in the stretch from now until harvest.
