A convicted sex offender caught during a standoff at an apartment complex in North Jackson was indicted on burglary charges for crawling through a ceiling duct into neighboring apartments.
Bryan K. Dilling, 41, of Beloit, was indicted on three counts of burglary by a Mahoning County grand jury. His girlfriend, Collena Carpenter, 29, was indicted on charges of making methamphetamine and obstructing justice.
On July 23, while running from law enforcement, Dilling kicked in the door to a 35 S. Salem Warren Road building and crawled through the ceiling to three adjacent apartment to hide from U.S. Marshals, officials said.
Law enforcement surrounded the building until Dilling surrendered after about 90 minutes.
Officers found items used to make methamphetamine inside the apartment where Dilling was staying with Carpenter.
Neighbors said they became suspicious of Carpenter and Dilling when they asked neighbors to buy cold medicine for them, which the suspects then used to make meth.
Court records show Dilling was being chased by authorities because he never showed up for a May 22 sentencing hearing in Stark County Common Pleas Court.
He originally was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine in Alliance and was held on $100,000 bond. He pleaded guilty to aggravated drug possession on April 16.
Dililng has a long criminal history that dates back to 1992 in Columbiana County and includes an active warrant for his arrest on a petty theft charge in Sebring stemming from an April 28 incident.
Reports say Dilling stole a friend’s Xbox 360 video game system with several games from her Ohio Avenue home.
The woman called Dilling while with police. Reports say officers heard Dilling admit to stealing the video game system. The woman threatened she would go to police and Dilling told her “he had been in prison and wasn’t afraid to go back,” reports say.
Court records show he spent six months in jail in 1992 for drug trafficking and theft in Columbiana County and another nine months in 2006 for burglary.
He was convicted of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Mahoning County in 2009, a charge amended from car theft. He was sent to jail for 120 days.
In April 2012, he pleaded guilty to gross sexual imposition in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Records say he coerced his former girlfriend’s 17-year-old mentally impaired daughter to have sex with him after he pulled her into a shed in Salem. The girl told authorities she had sex with Dililng because she feared he would harm her.
Carpenter, according to a search of court records, was sentenced to three years probation in 2008 after she pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in Stark County Common Pleas Court. The same year she pleaded guilty to breaking and entering in Goshen Township.
She was sentenced in 2010 to 18 months probation after she pleaded guilty to 13 counts of forgery in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The next year she pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and was sentenced to six months.
