Event focuses on outdoors

Area kids headed to the Mahoning Sportsman Club Saturday to learn about outdoor activities.

Over 170 kids turned out for the annual Youth Field Day in Hillsville, Pa. The group shot pistols, tried their hand at canoeing and attempted skeet shooting along with other activities.

Mahoning Sportsman Secretary Scott Rondeau said the event gives kids a chance to experience the many activities the outdoors has to offer in an age that is focused on technology.

“You know as well as I do in todays time and place everyone is in video games and cell phones and Facebook, and this gives them the chance to step away from that for at least one day,” said Rondeau. “It gives them hands on experience and time with their parents.”

The field day has been held since the 70s and is sponsored in part by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Kids from all over Western Pennsylvania and Northeastern Ohio attended the event.
