Ohio authorities accuse grandson in woman’s death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio man who police say beat his grandmother is facing murder charges in connection with her death.

Authorities found the body of 77-year-old Doris Durette after the suspect, Timothy J. Smith, 35, called a dispatcher Sunday night saying the woman had fallen the night before, “cracked her head pretty good” and wasn’t breathing at the moment.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Smith was charged with murder Monday. Durette died from blunt-force trauma according to court records.

The newspaper says four hours before the woman was found, Smith’s estranged wife had called police asking for an officer to check on Durette.

Cassidy Smith told a dispatcher she believed Durette and her grandson were fighting over an incident involving Timothy Smith’s daughter.

Timothy Smith’s attorney was not available for comment.
