6 Venezuela soldiers detained in student’s killing

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s government says six army sergeants have been arrested as suspects in the shooting death of a college student in the coastal state of Carabobo.

A Public Ministry statement says the 20-year-old law school student was driving in the state capital of Valencia on Wednesday when he was surprised by soldiers, who shot him several times.

The troops were patrolling as part of a government operation using the military to help combat crime.

It was the third such incident in a month. A dozen National Guard troops were detained in early July in the killing of the wife of an opposition leader and her teenage daughter in Falcon state, and a National Guard soldier was arrested in mid-July in the slaying of a young man in a Caracas slum.
