Building burns, 2 homes damaged in Portland, Ore.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Fire has destroyed a five-story apartment building under construction and heavily damaged two homes in a northeast Portland neighborhood, but no one was injured.

Portland Fire and Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman says the building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday. Police helped evacuate about a dozen homes that were threatened.

The collapsing building nearly fell on a fire engine, but crews were able to move it out of the way in time.

Every available Portland firefighter and piece of equipment responded to the five-alarm fire — seven ladder trucks, more than two dozen engines and more than 120 firefighters.

Chatman says the apartment building has been reduced to a smoldering “debris pile.”
