A couple with a combined 124 years working for the family business is retiring.

Sonny and Jo-Ann Elmo of Elmo Tire Service, Inc. of Youngstown were surprised by family and friends Friday afternoon at Mill Creek Park.

Sonny is celebrating 71 years in the automotive business.  His wife, Jo-Ann, kept the books at Elmo’s for 53 years.

Sonny said he started working for his dad at age 12 during World War II. The business was founded in the 1920s by Sonny’s father and his cousins.

“I just can’t believe I’ve been here for 60 some years. I can’t believe it’s been that long. It’s kinda hard. I enjoy meeting, talking to people. I enjoy everything about it,” Sonny said.

Elmo’s was originally located on Youngstown-Poland Road before opening its Loveland Road location in the 1950s. Sonny said he went to the Korean War for three years and when he returned, the business had moved.

“I enjoy when people come in and they’ve had estimates four times the amount they should’ve been. And we’re able to save them a lot of money. I like that and that’s what I’ve been doing all my life,” Sonny said.
