Yooper Day in Marquette, other cities bid for 2014

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — Get ready, residents of St. Ignace, Hancock and Escanaba — the next Yooper Day could come to your hometown.

Upper Peninsula residents call themselves “Yoopers,” and Marquette hosted the first Yooper Day celebration on Saturday.

Dozens of food vendors greeted visitors to the event Saturday at Mattson Lower Harbor Park.

Sonny Anderson says he came up with the idea and hopes to make the celebration an annual event.

WLUC-TV (http://bit.ly/13c7Qey ) says Yooper Day is getting bids from Escanaba, Hancock and St. Ignace to host the 2015 celebration.

Larry Bluse of Marquette County’s Ishpeming Township says the event came on a beautiful day, with “lots of people around” and good music.
