W. Pa. man’s suicide ends nearly 5-hour standoff

AMBRIDGE, Pa. (AP) — Police say a western Pennsylvania man has been found dead after committing suicide ending a police standoff that began when his girlfriend called 911 to report getting suicidal text messages from the man.

Ambridge police Chief James Mann says 37-year-old Robert Burke was found dead about 8 p.m. Saturday inside his home.

Police had been called about 3:10 p.m. and surrounded the home after Burke’s girlfriend reported the text messages. Police say Burke and the woman had argued that morning and that he sent her the messages after she decided to go to Cleveland to get a tattoo.

Police say Burke shot himself, perhaps as early as 4:15 p.m., though they weren’t able to get into the house to confirm that for hours.
