Pa. man gets 30 years for trying to procure girl

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania man will spend 30 years in federal prison for trying to procure an 11-year-old girl for sex, only to find she didn’t exist but was the object of an FBI sting.

The Erie Times-News ( ) says Douglas Melter apologized for his actions and told the federal judge who sentenced him Monday in Erie that he tried and failed to quell his desire for young girls, and hopes to seek counseling in prison.

Melter says, “I do not want to be responsible for hurting another human being.”

Melter was arrested after he exchanged text messages in January with a prostitute who was cooperating with the government. He had offered to pay the woman $1,200 if she could find him an girl with whom he could have sex and take explicit pictures.
