The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has partnered with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and The Brilex Group of Companies on an innovative pre-school learning tool.
A school year calendar featuring educational tips and topics is provided to the 600 students and their families participating in the United Way’s “Success By 6” program.
“We cannot give parents and caregivers more time, but we can help increase their knowledge and skills by providing specific information about ways to help children get off to a good start with the new school year,” said Kathy Mock, director of education and initiatives for the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. “The calendar helps turn everyday moments into learning moments.”
By using the calendar as a guide, parents become partners by supporting the work performed by a child’s teacher.
The United Way’s Success By 6 Early Childhood Summer program focuses on children’s health, early literacy, and a pre-kindergarten summer intervention and readiness program.
“The Library’s partnership with the Success By 6 calendar allows us to provide another way to reinforce the work we already do in our Baby Brilliant and children’s programming,” said library director Heidi M. Daniel. “Because we believe strongly in the importance of a good foundation for reading, we also share early literacy techniques with family members and caregivers, giving them the tools to work with their little ones. The activities in the Success By 6 calendar are important in enhancing the reading experience for children in our community. For all these reasons and more, we are pleased to partner with United Way in this valuable effort.”
“The Library is committed to helping children enter school ready to learn, and we are thrilled to be a partner with United Way in this worthwhile effort,” said Josephine Nolfi, library manager of programming and youth services, and a member of the Success By 6 Advisory Committee. “This calendar will help families make every day a learning experience. Along with the calendar appearing on our website, our customers can also pick up a copy of monthly events in our libraries.”
