A dam  on the Mahoning River between Campbell and Struthers soon could be coming down.

Struthers City Council on Wednesday gave approval to apply for an EPA grant to pay for removal of the dam underneath a walkway that steel workers once used to cross the river to work. Mayor Terry Stocker is hoping the application can get on a priority list, which could cover the entire cost of the project.

“We would hopefully it wouldn’t cost the city of Struthers anything out of pocket, but I can’t be sure of that. As we move forward, we will be able to gain additional information,” Stocker said.

Lowellville officials also applied for an EPA grant to remove a dam in their community.

Removing the dams will allow boaters to use the river for recreational activities.
