Southern Cape Verde Islands under storm warning

MIAMI (AP) — A tropical depression has formed over the far-east Atlantic Ocean, and forecasters have issued a tropical storm warning for the southern Cape Verde Islands.

The National Hurricane Center said early Thursday that the unnamed storm is located 55 miles (88 kilometers) southeast of Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands. It had top winds of 35 mph (56 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph (22 kph).

The government of the Cape Verde Islands has issued a tropical storm warning for the southern Cape Verde Islands of Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

The storm is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday. Its center was passing south of the Cape Verde Islands early Thursday. The system was expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain over the southern portion of the islands.
