Supplies given to area students

Nearly 500 kids in the Valley are ready for school to start thanks to the Salvation Army in Mahoning County.

The group distributed 450 backpacks filled with school supplies to needy children at their headquarters on Glenwood Avenue in Youngstown.

The back to school gear was provided to children  of families registered and who are below 200% of the federal poverty line.

Major Valerie Kahn said without the necessary supplies, children can face big disadvantages in school. The goal of the program is to help struggling families and assist them with grade appropriate school supplies to start the school year.

“We anticipate to see many smiling faces when they receive their backpacks stuffed with necessary school supplies,” said Kahn.
