Youngstown man kicks off NASCAR race

A Youngstown man got Sunday’s NASCAR racecars off to a fast start.

Army veteran and Purple Heart Recipient, Dave Balestrino Jr., waved the green flag at the start of Sunday’s NASCAR race in Michigan.

He was chosen as the honorary starter through a Facebook contest.

Balestrino won a Facebook contest getting hundreds of votes after posting about his son six-year-old son, Brady.

Balestrino missed most of Brady’s first year while serving overseas in Iraq.

He wants to take this opportunity to honor his son who too had to make a sacrifice while he was serving.
