Father sent to prison

The father of a then-3-month-old Boardman boy found not breathing and unresponsive in March was sentenced to two years in prison last week.

Sam Lippillo, 30, of 72 Meadowbrook Ave., pleaded guilty Friday to one count of child endangering and was sentenced to two years in prison.

The victim in the case agreed to the sentencing recommendation made by prosecutors.

Lippillo was charged with causing extensive severe injuries that resulted in his son being hospitalized for weeks, prosecutors said.

The boy was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman after he was found him unresponsive and not breathing. The boy was then flown via emergency helicopter to the Akron campus. The boy stayed there several weeks, prosecutors said, while he recovered.

Prosecutors previously said medical officials will not know how the injuries will affect the boy until he’s older.

Police reports said Lippillo told a social worker the boy was sleeping when he went to move his dog off the couch. Lippillo said his baby then fell to the floor and was knocked unconscious.

Medical officials told police a CAT scan revealed the boy previously suffered nine rib fractures and multiple brain bleeds from past injuries.

Medical personnel told investigators the severity of the injuries “made it highly unlikely” they were caused by falling off a couch.
