Homeless couple charged in five area burglaries

A homeless man and woman were charged Monday with burglarizing five Austintown homes by climbing through unlocked windows during the past week.

Kevin Smith, 25, and Amanda Newcomer, 19, were charged Monday with five second-degree felony counts of burglary or complicity to burglary. Each charge carries an eight-year maximum sentence.

Preliminary hearings are scheduled for Wednesday.

Reports say Smith and Newcomer broke into five houses between Wednesday and Sunday.

Newcomer also was issued a summons Saturday for shoplifting at Kmart and is facing additional charges of petty theft, possessing drugs, criminal trespass and drug abuse. Reports say Smith was with her at the time, but fled.

The duo were arrested by police about 12:30 a.m. Monday at the Westgate Motel on Mahoning Avenue. Reports say Newcomer told officers she used a syringe in the room and the two later admitted to burglarizing the five homes.

Reports say on Wednesday the duo climbed through an unlocked front window in the 4300 block of Cannon Road and stole $300 to $400 cash. Officers also noted a Miller Lite beer can was taken from the refrigerator and put on the kitchen counter. Reports say officers took a jar that had contained $70 in change for evidence.

Reports say the two then pushed open a kitchen window Friday in the 3600 block of Acton Avenue and stole a Samsung notepad, a GPS unit and a homemade lottery ticket tree. Officers took a partially lit cigarette found on an air conditioner outside the home.

The next day, the two moved a screen from a back kitchen window in the 3300 block of Starwick Drive and stole an iPad, a laptop computer and a Sports Illustrated gym bag, reports say.

About a half hour later, a woman reported she heard a noise downstairs and eventually saw a man inside her home in the 4200 block of Claridge Drive. The man, later identified as Smith, reports say, told the woman “I know your son.” The woman told police she doesn’t have a son.

The woman let the man out of her house and later noticed he climbed through a back bay window. Nothing was reported stolen.

On Sunday, an 83-year-old man reported he returned home to find a man believed to be Smith running out of the back door of his home in the 3900 block of Cumberland Drive. Reports say Smith climbed through a bathroom window and stole $380 from a dresser drawer.
