Dates set for 60th anniversary Jazz Festival

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The Newport Jazz Festival may have just wrapped up another year but organizers are already planning for the 60th anniversary of the iconic musical event’s founding.

The Newport Festivals Foundation announced Tuesday that next year’s festival will take place Aug. 1-3. Jazz impresario George Wein (ween) says he is already planning for the big anniversary. Wein produced the first festival in 1954.

This year’s festival attracted more than 17,000 people to three days of music.

Over the decades the festival has showcased a who’s who of jazz superstars including Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington.
