The nation’s weather

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, August 23, 2013.

Areas of active weather will persist for the nation on Friday, as multiple weather features affect the country. In the East, a cold front stretching from the Northeast through the Midwest will continue sliding southeastward over the Eastern Valleys. At the same time, a low pressure system spinning in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico will continue pushing abundant moisture onshore. These systems will allow for more shower and thunderstorm activity to persist for the Southeast from eastern Texas through the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Meanwhile, out West, monsoonal moisture over the desert Southwest and Four Corners continues producing showers and thunderstorms over the region. This increased lightning activity will keep fire danger high for these areas. In the North, a low pressure system moves eastward over the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies, pushing a warm front into the northern High Plains throughout the day. This will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to Montana and into the Dakotas into the afternoon and evening hours.

To the south, Tropical Depression Nine-E has developed in the East Pacific about 390 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. This system will continue moving north-northwestward on Friday, remaining just west of Baja California. However, flow around this system will push abundant moisture into northwestern Mexico. This system may increase to tropical storm strength with winds from 39 to 73 mph. Expect heavy rainfall and strong winds to move into southern Baja California Friday evening into Saturday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of 37 degrees at Langdon, N.D. to a high of 108 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
