Pa. festival bank robber, driver still sought

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Police were still searching Monday for a getaway driver and a man who robbed a bank while a western Pennsylvania city was celebrating its place in history as the home of the banana split.

Latrobe police say the robber targeted a Citizens Bank branch in Latrobe, shortly after 11 a.m. Friday. The driver, possibly in a black BMW or other European model sedan, drove the suspect away on Route 982.

The robbery happened as city officials were dedicating a historic marker at a former pharmacy nearby, crediting apprentice pharmacist David Strickler with creating the first banana split in 1904.

Dole, the fruit company, and nearby St. Vincent College were teaming with the city about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh to celebrate the event.
