Temple cancels Spring Fling event, citing drinking

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple University says it is canceling its decades-old Spring Fling, citing what they called “a dangerous culture of high-risk drinking” that has become associated with the event.

Philly.com (http://bit.ly/180N8fa ) says a campus-wide email sent Tuesday morning says officials will work with student leaders and organizations to craft a new campus-wide event for spring with a different feel.

School officials made no reference to the April death of 19-year-old Ali Fausnaught, a West Chester University student who fell from a third-story north Philadelphia row house roof during an off-campus rooftop party near Temple during Spring Fling.

Officials also said that Spring Fling began when Temple was still a commuter school and they believe the event has outlived its usefulness.
