Court tackles boys playing girls’ sports in Pa.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A state judge is declining to intervene in the growing issue of boys playing in sports traditionally reserved for girls, saying a previous court ruling doesn’t necessarily prohibit the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association from banning the practice.

Commonwealth Court Judge Kevin Brobson on Tuesday turned down a request by the PIAA to modify a landmark 1975 state court ruling that required schools to let girls play on boys’ teams.

Brobson says he can’t issue an advisory position about whether a ban on boys playing girls’ sports would be constitutional. He says it’s up to the PIAA to adopt a new policy, and then see if someone challenges it in court.

A PIAA lawyer says it’s likely the organization will consider such a policy for the next school years.
