RI bus monitor suspended after girl left stranded

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials in Providence, R.I., say they’ve suspended a school bus monitor after a 5-year-old girl was dropped off with no one waiting for her after the first day of school and she roamed city streets for more than an hour.

Antonia Dwyer tells WJAR-TV (http://bit.ly/1708wih ) her daughter was supposed to be taken by a van to day care after attending Harry Kizirian Elementary School on Wednesday. Instead, she got on a bus and was dropped off alone on a busy thoroughfare.

Dwyer says a random couple saw her daughter wandering and took care of her. The girl wasn’t harmed.

Providence School Superintendent Susan Lusi says what happened was inexcusable and the bus monitor was suspended pending an investigation. Officials also are examining school dismissal procedures.
