McDonald capitalizes on turnovers in win

McDonald – The McDonald Blue Devils took advantage of Bulldog turnovers in the second quarter to blow open the game en route to a 54-6 victory Friday night. The Dogs fumbled the ball on three consecutive possessions and the Devils capitalized on the short field to score 19 points, adding to their 15-0 lead before the three Dog miscues.

Despite numerous penalties against the Devils in the first quarter, they would score their first touchdown on a 13-yard run by Cameron Ifft with just 52 seconds remaining in the quarter. Ifft would add a two-point conversion to put the Devils up 8-0.

They would add a second touchdown at the 5:46 mark of the second quarter when Jason Reckard would race in from 4 yards out to give the Devils a 15-0 lead and that is when the roof caved in on the Dogs.

The Dogs first fumble resulted in a Zack Conley 2-yard run to make it 21-0 at 3:42 of the second quarter. The second turnover resulted in a second score by Reckard, this time from 12 yards out, and the final fumble gave the Devils a chance to score just before halftime as they tallied with just 52 seconds remaining in the half. Conley would hit Matt Morrell on a terrific catch in the back of the end zone to make it 34-0 at intermission.

“If you look at it overall, I’m pleased offensively when there wasn’t a yellow hanky on the ground,” Devils coach Dan Williams said. I thought we executed really well, except on the plays we had holding calls on and a couple off-sides. I was pleased with all our runners, our front-line blocking, and our quarterback made some good throws as well.”

“I told the guys at halftime, the intensity and the attitude we had that first series of defense, we had guys flying around to the ball, it was great to see,” Bulldogs coach Tony Foster said. “First series of offense, we did a nice job stringing together some first downs, taking care of the ball. Those were two good series that we could have been back and forth.”

The Devils would add to their advantage in the second half as they scored on a 2-yard run by back-up quarterback Ben Carkido with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The score made it 41-0 after three stanzas.

They would add two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard run by Jake Lowery, and a 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Dylan Portolese with 8:26 left in the game. The Dogs got on the scoreboard with a Grant Wagner one-yard plunge with only 3:32 remaining.

East Palestine will travel to Mathews next Friday. The Devils travel to Streetsboro.
