Ohio police dog dies after 7-month illness

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — A police dog whose handler says he helped in the investigation of numerous drug-related cases in southeastern Ohio has died.

Turner, a black Labrador, died on Thursday after a 7-month-long illness. It’s unclear how old he was.

Athens County sheriff’s deputies tell the Athens Messenger (http://bit.ly/1988NmE) that they’ll remember Turner for his personality, his loyalty and his drug-busting skills.

Deputy John Kulchar says Turner “had a very strong work ethic” and found a lot of drugs for the department in his time there.

Deputy Matt Mays was Turner’s partner for four years and says he had planned on retiring him before he got a tumor and his health went downhill.

Dolly, a 2-year-old German shepherd, will take over Turner’s position.
