W. Pa. football player arrested in assault case

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania university football player has been suspended from the team following his arrest in an assault case.

Twenty-year-old Claudy Matheiu of Philadelphia, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman at California University of Pennsylvania, is charged with aggravated and simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Police in California, Pa., said a large crowd of people were yelling at each other across the street early Saturday, and they allege that Mathieu ran across the street and punched another man repeatedly.

University spokeswoman Christine Kindle said Mathieu has been indefinitely suspended while the matter is investigated by the team, and the university’s discipline process will also address the issue.

The school says on its website that Mathieu made the honor roll last spring. Court documents don’t list an attorney for him.
