Indonesia jails 8 elite soldiers to up to 11 years

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian military court has sentenced eight soldiers from the country’s elite special forces unit to up to 11 years in jail for storming a prison and fatally shooting four detainees.

Presiding Judge Lt. Col. Joko Sasmito told a military court in Yogyakarta, on the main island of Java, Thursday that Sgt. Ucok Tigor Simbolon was found guilty of executing the detainees and sentenced him to 11 years. Two other soldiers got eight and six years for helping with the executions.

The soldiers broke into Yogyakarta’s Cebongan prison March 23 and killed four men held on charges of murdering a member of the elite army unit, known as Kopassus.

Five other soldiers were sentenced Thursday to 21 months in a separate trial. Verdicts for four other soldiers are due Friday.
